Hyacinth, St (d. 1257), ‘Apostle of Poland’. Born in NE Poland, he went to Italy and there joined the Dominican Order c.1220. He was put in charge of a group of Dominicans sent to Poland; he founded priories at Cracow (1223) and Gdańsk (c.1225), and devoted himself to missionary work. The story of his extensive labours in Scandinavia lacks historical foundation. Feast day, 17 (formerly 16) Aug.
