Hyacinth, St (d. 1257), ‘Apostle of
Poland’. Born in NE Poland, he went to Italy and there joined the
Dominican Order c.1220. He was put in charge of a group of Dominicans sent to Poland; he founded priories at Cracow (1223) and Gdańsk (
c.1225), and devoted himself to missionary work. The story of his extensive labours in Scandinavia lacks historical foundation. Feast day, 17 (formerly 16) Aug.
