Hadrian the African, St

Hadrian the African, St (d. 709/10), monk. Having declined Pope Vitalian's offer of the see of Canterbury, he was instrumental in securing the appointment for Theodore of Tarsus. He set off for England with him in 668 and became the abbot of the monastery of Sts Peter and Paul (later St Augustine's), Canterbury, and master of the school. A man of learning, he fostered education. Feast day, 9 Jan.
