Grünewald, Matthias

The Concise Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church | 2000 | Copyright

Grünewald, Matthias (c.1475–1528), German painter, known in his lifetime as Mathis Gothart Nithart. The most famous work attributed to him is the altar-piece of Isenheim, now in Colmar. The Crucifixion is portrayed with cruel realism, with St John the Baptist pointing to the Cross.
