Gregory of Tours, St (538/9–94), Bp. of Tours from 573 and historian. His Historia Francorum covers the period from the Creation up to 591, from 575 in detail; this work is of prime importance for the history of France. His hagiographical Miraculorum Libri are of less historical value. Feast day, 17 Nov.
