Francis of Paola, St

Francis of Paola, St (1416–1507), founder of the Order of Minims and patron of Italian seafarers. As a boy, he spent a year with the Franciscans. In 1431 he began to live as a hermit, first in a cave near the Tyrrhenian Sea and then in a nearby forest. He was joined by others c.1435 and became the spiritual guide of a group of hermits; from c.1452 he began to live with them in community. Other foundations followed. Feast day, 2 Apr.
