Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. Forty English and Welsh RCs put to death by the State between 1535 and 1680. In 1960 the promoters of the causes of those who had been executed in this period decided to concentrate on a select number, termed the Forty Martyrs. The Roman authorities agreed to accept proof of two miracles for the whole group instead of for each member of it. The Forty Martyrs were canonized in 1970. Feast day, 25 Oct.
