Eucharistic vestments. In the W. the traditional vestments of the celebrant of the Eucharist are the alb, amice, chasuble, girdle, maniple, and stole. They derive from the secular clothing of Roman citizens in the 2nd cent. In the E. Church the vestments are fundamentally the same, though different in shape. In the C of E they fell into disuse after the Reformation; their revival in the 19th cent. aroused controversy, but the 1969 Canons permit ‘an alb with the customary vestments’.
