‘E’. A symbol used by scholars who follow the ‘documentary hypothesis’ of the origins of the
Pentateuch (q.v.) to denote the Eloistic source. It is distinguished from
‘J’ by its regular use of
'eloihim (‘God’) where ‘J’ uses Yahweh (Jahveh or Jehovah).
