Doctors' Commons. A society of ecclesiastical lawyers founded in the late 15th cent. It served as a college of advocates for those practising in the ecclesiastical courts and in the Court of Admiralty. Judges in the Abp. of Canterbury's courts were usually selected from its members. It virtually ceased in 1857, though it was in legal existence until 1912.
