Descent of Christ into Hell, the. Most Christians believe that this article in the Creed refers to the Lord's visit after His death to the realm of existence in which the souls of pre-Christian people waited for the message of the Gospel. It first occurs in 4th-cent. Arian formularies, from which it spread in the W. and found its way into the Apostles' Creed.
