Darwinism. The form of the theory of evolution put forward by Charles Darwin, especially in The Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871). Darwin held that species of living beings evolve by natural selection, the individuals best adapted to their circumstances being the most likely to survive and propagate.
