Câmara, Helder Passoa

Câmara, Helder Passoa (1909–99), RC Abp. of Olinda and Recife in Brazil from 1964 to 1985. A native of Brazil, he was consecrated auxiliary Bp. of Rio de Janeiro in 1952. Here he was instrumental in setting up the Conference of Brazilian Bishops and the Latin American Episcopal Council. He was increasingly concerned about the plight of the destitute in the capital and as Archbishop was outspoken in his condemnation of political injustice. His writings gave him a world-wide reputation.
