Chancery, Papal. The name attached in the late 12th cent. to the Pope's secretariat. In the 14th cent. the Chancery exercised quasi-legislative powers, but from the 15th cent. its influence diminished. In 1973 it was abolished and its functions transferred to the Secretariat of State.
