Catechetical School of Alexandria. A Christian school in
Alexandria, concerned with advanced teaching in theology and with a succession of teachers in charge from the 2nd to the 4th cent., is depicted by
Philip Sidetes (5th cent.) and, with some differences, by
Eusebius of Caesarea; it is not, however, clear that this picture is accurate. It is more probable that there were various individual teachers, and it is uncertain whether advanced teaching continued after
Origen's departure to
Caesarea in 251.
