Capuchins. An offshoot of the
Franciscan Order, founded by Matteo di Bassi of Urbino (d. 1552), an
Observant Friar. Its members wear a pointed cowl (
capuche). The Rule, drawn up in 1529, re-emphasized the Franciscan ideals of poverty, austerity, and contemplative prayer. Until modern times the Capuchins were the strictest of the Franciscan families.
