Brethren of the Common Life. An association founded in the 14th cent. to foster a higher level of Christian life and devotion. The original leader was G.
Groote (q.v.); he demanded no vows but left his disciples free to continue their ordinary vocations. They founded many schools offering excellent free education, and many of their members engaged in copying MSS and later in printing. After Groote's death (1384) the leadership was assumed by
Florentius Radewijns. One group adopted a rule and organized themselves as
Augustinian Canons. The Brethren included I.
Busch,
Thomas à Kempis, and G.
Biel.
