Assyrian Christians. A name adopted in modern times by members of the
Church of the East (q.v.) who claim descent from the ancient Assyrians. Their Patriarch is now officially styled ‘Catholicos Patriarch of the Assyrian Church’. More recently the term ‘Assyrian’ has sometimes been adopted by members of the
Syrian Orthodox Church abroad.
