Arnold, Matthew (1822–88), poet and literary critic. The eldest son of T.
Arnold, from 1851 to 1883 he was a Government Inspector of Schools; from 1857 to 1867 he was also Professor of Poetry at Oxford. He held that religion should be concerned with conduct and not speculation. Christianity stressed personal rather than national conduct and suffused morality with emotion and so with happiness.
