Antiochus Epiphanes (d. 164 BC), King of Syria from 175 BC. In 169 BC he attacked
Jerusalem and despoiled the
Temple; in 167 BC Jewish customs were forbidden, the Temple was defiled, and pagan cults instituted. This led to the
Maccabean revolt.
