c.660–740), theologian. He became Abp. of Gortyna in Crete
c.692. In the early stages of the
Iconoclastic controversy, he defended the veneration of icons. He wrote many hymns, notably a series of
canons, a form of composition which he is said to have invented. Feast day in the E., 4 July.
