Andrew of Crete, St

Andrew of Crete, St (c.660–740), theologian. He became Abp. of Gortyna in Crete c.692. In the early stages of the Iconoclastic controversy, he defended the veneration of icons. He wrote many hymns, notably a series of canons, a form of composition which he is said to have invented. Feast day in the E., 4 July.
