Allen, William (1532–94), Cardinal from 1587. Forced to flee from England in 1565, he concentrated on training RC mission priests for the conversion of England; he founded colleges at
Douai (1568) and Rome (1575–8) and encouraged the foundation at Valladolid (1589). The
Douai version of the Bible was produced under his inspiration.
