Alleluia (Heb., ‘Praise ye Yah’), a liturgical expression of praise. It occurs in the Bible (e.g. in Pss. 111–17) and it was early taken into the liturgy of the Church. In the W. it is omitted from the Mass and Office during Lent, and as an expression of joy it is used especially frequently in
Paschaltide. In the E. Alleluias occur with special frequency during the Lenten services.
