stars
stars In the ancient world of the Near East and in Graeco-Roman societies stars were held to be supernatural beings, and astrologers flourished, as in
babylonia (Isa. 47: 13). Astrology was rejected by
prophets (Jer. 10: 2) as an unhealthy foreign influence. When it appeared it was condemned, e.g. by
Amos (5: 26) and suppressed by King
Josiah (2 Kgs. 23: 4–14); it had been introduced during the reign of
Manasseh (687–642 BCE, 2 Kgs. 21: 3–5).
