selah
selah Hebrew word found in certain of the psalms and in Habakkuk. In AV it is incorporated into the text e.g. Ps. 88: 7; Hab. 3: 9), but in NRSV and REB the word is italicized and put in the margin. Its meaning is uncertain but NJB adopts the view that the word is some kind of instruction to readers or singers, and translates it as ‘pause’, in the margin.
