scrolls Rolls of papyrus (which was grown in Egypt) used for writing. They were sometimes made of leather, from which mistakes were more difficult to erase, and this was the preferred material for the scrolls of the Dead Sea Qumran community. Pens were made from rushes.

The Church adopted the codex in preference to scrolls.
