saviour

saviour Used in the OT of God (e.g. Isa. 43: 3), who delivers Israel out of the Exile, and of Jesus in the NT in a similar sense (of deliverance) (Luke 2: 11). It is used of Jesus as the saviour of the world (John 4: 42) and occurs frequently in the Pastoral Epistles (e.g. 1 Tim. 1: 1) but otherwise rarely in the NT. The title was commonly applied to pagan deities and also to ruling ‘benefactors’ (Luke 22: 25), such as Ptolemy I and Roman emperors. The salvation which Jesus is believed in the Pastoral Epistles to offer is deliverance from sin. As a Christological title, it may have been influenced in the later NT writings by current Hellenistic usage.
