roofs The roof of a flat building was to be provided with a parapet to prevent an accidental fall (Deut. 22: 8). This is an example of OT humane legislation. Roofs were useful amenities to a house (for observation—by David, 2 Sam. 11: 2; for guests—Elisha, 2 Kgs. 4: 10). In Palestine of OT times roofs were simple constructions; branches laid horizontally supported by columns were covered with earth or straw (Mark 2: 4), though in cities of the Roman Empire houses had roofs of tiles (Luke 5: 19).
