ostraca Potsherds: broken pieces of clay pottery used in the Near East and Egypt for writing brief messages and receipts. Being almost imperishable, many of these have been discovered by archaeologists. A notable discovery, in 1935, included some twenty-five of the ‘Lachish Letters’ to the army commander (Yaosh) who was defending Lachish; they came from a worried Judaean captain (Hoshaiah) when the babylonians were approaching the city shortly before 587 BCE (Jer. 34: 7).
