martyr In Greek, ‘witness’ and so one who bore witness to faith in Christ by his or her death, as did Stephen (Acts 7: 60; 22: 20). Witnesses to Jesus by death are praised too in Rev. 17: 6, and from the end of the 2nd cent. martyrs were commemorated on the anniversary of their deaths.
