imprisonment
imprisonment This was not a regular punishment in Israel, but Pharaoh's butler and baker are said to have been imprisoned in
Egypt together with
Joseph (Gen. 40: 3).
Jeremiah was once placed in the stocks (Jer. 20: 2) and later imprisoned (Jer. 37: 15). King
Artaxerxes authorized
Ezra to make use of this punishment (Ezra 7: 26).
John the Baptist the Baptist was imprisoned (Mark 6: 17), for
Herod the Great had built great prisons to incarcerate any who threatened him. Peter was imprisoned by Herod
Agrippa I (Acts 12: 4). It was a common punishment in the Roman Empire (Acts 16: 24); the epistles to the Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, and Ephesians are all written from prison.
