confession The word is used in two senses —of an expression of faith, as Peter's confession at Caesarea Philippi (Mark 8: 29 etc.), and of the recognition of sins, as when people came to be baptized by John (Matt.

3: 6). A primitive confession of faith was ‘Jesus is Lord’ (1 Cor. 12: 3), but, with differing interpretations of this brief confession, it became necessary for the Church to devise more detailed confessions in the form of creeds.
