baraitha

baraitha A citation of an ancient tradition in the Talmud but not recorded in the Mishnah. One important baraitha is an instruction to be added as number 12 to the Eighteen Benedictions, condemning heretics. It was inspired by Gamaliel II, the leader of the rabbinic assembly at Jamnia, towards the end of the 1st cent. CE.
