aqeda A term used by rabbis for the elaborate theological development of the Genesis story of the sacrifice of Isaac (Gen. 22: 1–19) with a doctrine of atonement comparable with that of the NT. The rabbinic doctrine could have influenced Paul (e.g. in Gal. 3: 16–17). Abraham's faith is held up as an example by James (2: 21) because it issued in action.
