adversary In Hebrew, ‘Satan’, or ‘the Accuser’ (Job 1: 6, NRSV marg.); his role is to find out about human frailties and provoke the innocent to sin. The sons of  Zeruiah became an adversary to David (2 Sam. 19: 22) in opposing the will of God. In the NT Satan is the adversary par excellence (1 Pet. 5: 8).
