Sodom One of the cities of the plain (Gen. 19: 28) where Abraham's nephew Lot decided to live (Gen. 13: 8–13), near the Dead Sea; it was said to be a place of great wickedness (Amos 4: 11; Matt. 10: 15), though there is no evidence that this wickedness was ‘sodomy’—an offensive description of homosexual acts. Possibly the lascivious men trying to gain entrance had homosexual intentions. But in fact the ‘men’ inside the houses were angels, so that we, the readers, are aware that homosexual acts could not have been committed! The story cannot therefore be teaching that the city was destroyed (Gen. 19: 24) as a warning that all homosexual acts are intrinsically evil.
