Medes
Medes A people who rose to power in the Near East, and captured
Nineveh in 612 BCE, but were conquered by Cyrus and became part of the Persian Empire in 549 BCE. During the Exile they were expected by
Jeremiah (51: 11) to be God's instrument for punishing
Babylon. Dan. 5: 31 and 11: 1 supposes that the Medes fulfilled this prophecy before the rise of the Persians, which is unhistorical. In NT times Media included a Jewish population (Acts 2: 9).
