Malta ‘Melita’ (Acts 28: 1, AV); the island was captured by the Romans from the Carthaginians in 218 BCE and the ‘barbarous people’ (AV, giving a literal translation of the Greek; ‘nations’ in NRSV, REB; ‘inhabitants’, NJB) retained their Punic culture. Paul spent three months among them after his ship was wrecked on the journey to Rome.
