Hinnom valley
Hinnom valley A depression just west of Jerusalem where
children were sacrificed in idolatrous rites (Jer. 7: 31), though forbidden by
Josiah (2 Kgs. 23: 10). The Hebrew
Gehenna (= ‘valley of Hinnon’) came to mean
hell (Mark 9: 43, NRSV and REB; ‘Gehenna’ in NRSV marg.).
