Hermes In Greek mythology, the young attendant of the god Zeus, thought to be particularly eloquent (Acts 14: 12). The Roman equivalent was Mercury (AV). Paul was assumed to be Hermes by the crowd at
Lystra, though he himself is inclined to disparage his oratory (1 Cor. 2: 1) and he seems to have had only limited success at
Athens (Acts 17: 32–4).
