Haman

A Dictionary of the Bible

Haman A Persian politician in the court of Ahasuerus. After taking offence at an alleged insult by the Jew Mordecai, Haman vowed revenge, but through the intervention of Queen Esther with Ahasuerus, Haman suffered death on the gallows he had erected for Mordecai (Esther 7: 10). The story is dramatically related in the book of Esther, a literary creation designed to account for the Jewish feast of Purim.
