Caesarea Philippi
Caesarea Philippi An inland city on the River
Jordan at the foot of Mount
Hermon where
Herod the Great built a temple to Caesar
Augustus, who had given him the city. Formerly called Panion, the city was named after the emperor by Herod's son,
Philip the tetrarch, who egotistically added ‘Philippi’—to avoid confusion with the city on the Mediterranean coast.
