sympathetic nervous system
A Dictionary of Psychology
sympathetic nervous system n. One of the two major subdivisions of the
autonomic nervous system, consisting of nerves originating from the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions of the spinal cord, supplying muscles and glands, concerned with general activation and mobilizing the body's fight or flight reaction to stress or perceived danger. It acts in opposition to and more diffusely than the
parasympathetic nervous system, accelerating pulse rate, dilating the pupils of the eyes and preparing them for
far vision, causing the sweat glands to secrete and urine to be retained, inhibiting the
smooth muscles of the
alimentary canal, diverting blood from the skin and intestines to the voluntary
striped muscles, and activating the
adrenal gland to secrete
adrenalin (epinephrine) and
noradrenalin (norepinephrine). See also
sympathetic ganglionic chain.
