grouping law n. Any of the four laws formulated in 1923 by the Gestalt psychologist Max Wertheimer (1880–1943) to explain the organization of parts into wholes by the visual system, or one of the two additional laws suggested in 1990 by the US psychologists Irvin Rock (1922–95) and Stephen E. Palmer (born 1948). Also called a Gestalt principle of organization. See
