temperature minimum

temperature minimum A region in the Sun's atmosphere that marks the boundary between the photosphere and the chromosphere. It lies about 550 km above the base of the photosphere, where the temperature reaches a minimum of about 4400 K. Above the temperature minimum, the temperature rises steadily to about 6000 K at a height of about 1000 km, and then more rapidly higher up.
