starquake

starquake A proposed explanation for the abrupt disturbances (glitches) observed in the regular trains of pulses from certain pulsars. According to the starquake theory, a rapidly spinning neutron star will be slightly oblate, and as it slows down it will become more spherical. As it does so, the solid crust will undergo sudden fracturing and readjustments called starquakes, similar to earthquakes.
