spectral type
spectral type A means of classifying stars according to the details of their spectrum. The spectral type of a star depends largely on its surface temperature, and hence is also a guide to its colour, the hottest stars being the bluest and the coolest ones the reddest. The system of spectral types currently used is the
Morgan–Keenan classification. See
spectral classification.
