solar activity The collective term for all active phenomena on the Sun, including sunspots, faculae, active regions, plages, active prominences, and flares. Solar activity is strongly associated with magnetic fields, which are thought to arise from a dynamo action within the Sun. Solar activity increases and decreases in a cycle lasting approximately 11 years.
