silvering
silvering The process of coating a mirror with a layer of reflective silver. It is usually a chemical process, in which metallic silver is precipitated out of solution. The silver will adhere to any perfectly clean surface it encounters. It is normal for the silver coating thus produced to require additional burnishing, yielding a reflectivity of about 93%. Silvering was once the only practical method for coating glass mirrors, but it has now been superseded almost completely by
aluminizing, on grounds of cost and convenience.
