setting circle A graduated scale on each axis of an equatorial mount that indicates the position to which the telescope is pointing. The scale on the declination axis is fixed, while that on the polar axis can be rotated to match the particular right ascension or hour angle on view. On many modern telescopes, electronic encoders are attached to the shafts of the axes, thus enabling electronic displays and computer control of the pointing.
