radio meteor

radio meteor A meteor detected by forward scatter, in which its ionization trail momentarily reflects the signal from a transmitter beyond the observer's horizon. Raw counts of reflections can be processed to give an index of meteor shower activity, even in cloudy or daylit conditions. As with radar meteors, most events detected by forward scatter are produced by much smaller meteoroids than those which cause visual meteors. Small particles produce short, sharp signals, while larger meteoroids give longer-lasting reflections.
